Functional Classification

What Luka Bear Does β€” Functional Classification

A non-medical assistive technology device that helps adults stay independent at home — supporting daily living activities and health-related tasks, in line with CMS guidance for Assistive Technology under HCBS waiver programs.

πŸ’Š

Reminders, Including Medication Times

Reminders the family or care team sets up, including medication times. Luka listens for “took it” / “done” and reminds again in 15 minutes if it hears nothing. Nap-Safe Reminders saved during Pause Mode and delivered on wake.

ADL / health-related task support
πŸ“…

Appointment Coordination

Per-resident voice-driven scheduling. “Remind me to take my pills at 8 AM every day” β€” Luka announces on schedule.

IADL support
🚨

Caregiver Help Alert (Notification)

When the member says a help phrase such as “I need help” or “I fell” while Luka is in Active mode, Luka phones the configured caregiver and tells the member it is letting them know. Caregiver notification only β€” Luka never calls 911 and is not an emergency response system. In an emergency, call 911.

IADL support β€” caregiver notification
πŸŒ™

Overnight Support (Cognitive Guardianβ„’)

Patent-pending evening and night calming for late-day confusion and pre-sleep restlessness, in 4 steps: calming words, then quiet music, then a familiar family voice β€” and only if the person is still unsettled, a call to the caregiver or whoever is on duty. Multi-room configurations are not in general release yet.

Functional support β€” an extra set of ears overnight, not a replacement for in-person care
🀝

Family & Care Team Communication

Secure remote presence via the Caregiver Companion App. Authorized caregivers can be present with the member from anywhere, through a private link protected by an access key. Where a program requires it, this runs camera-free, with voice only. Voice Cloning of family members, family photos and guided conversation support.

IADL support β€” community and care-team connection
🌐

Multilingual Support

Luka speaks most languages and can hold a conversation with a member in their first language, including Spanish. Family voices and reminders work in the member’s own language.

IADL support — communication access
🎮

Engagement Activities and Games

Games and guided activities through the day, for cognitive engagement and routine. Reminiscence prompts, music, photo conversation and touchscreen activities that a person can use without help.

🚢

Activity Clips While Away

With Away Monitoring turned on (caregiver opt-in), Luka saves a short clip when it notices a big movement and gives the caregiver a quick call. Clips are deleted automatically after 7 days. Luka is not a fall-detection device.

Remote Caregiver Support

Included free on every plan. Caregivers can send reminders, start activities, check in and speak through Luka in a familiar family voice — from anywhere. A no-response check-in call phones the designated contact if the member has not interacted for a set period. A staff PIN keeps care settings separate from day-to-day use.

Camera Policy & Deployment

Deployment Configurations β€” Matched to Your Program’s Rules

Luka Bear is deployed in the exact configuration a program requires. For HCBS / Medicaid waivers it can run camera-free — active, on-demand, consent-based support, never passive surveillance.

Video-Free

Camera fully disabled — no live view, calls, detection, or recording. For the strictest waivers or any private-space concern.

Consent-Video

On-demand live check-in in a common area, with consent. No recording, no automated detection.

Full

All camera features, including optional activity clips while away (deleted after 7 days). For families purchasing or renting privately.

In many states, no provider enrollment is required

In many states the Assistive Technology benefit is requested by a case manager on behalf of a member, on the participant side of the programme, with no separate provider enrollment required from the supplier. Colorado confirmed this arrangement to us in writing in July 2026.

If your programme works this way, a case manager can request Luka for a member without us enrolling in your state at all. If you are unsure how your programme handles it, we are glad to help you find out. Write to info@eldercarerobotics.net.

Service area

Eldercare Robotics LLC is based in Rockville, Maryland and ships nationwide. Personal delivery and in-home setup is available in Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. Everywhere else Luka arrives by mail and setup is completed with the family on a video call.
